Bounce House Safety: A Parent's Complete Guide to Worry-Free Fun

Children safely playing in a bounce house at a Georgia party

Bounce houses are one of the most popular party rentals in America — and for good reason. Kids absolutely love them. But as a parent or event host, it's natural to have questions about safety. How many kids can be inside at once? What happens in bad weather? What should I look for in a rental company?

This guide answers every safety question we hear from parents in Middle Georgia. We've been renting inflatables since 2005, and safety is the foundation of everything we do at Wow Inflatables. We're members of both IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) and IOA (Inflatable Operators Association) — the two leading safety organizations in our industry.

The 10 Golden Rules of Bounce House Safety

1
Remove shoes before entering
Shoes — especially those with hard soles or cleats — can damage the inflatable and injure other children. All riders must remove shoes before entering.
2
No sharp objects or jewelry
Keys, belt buckles, earrings, and other sharp objects can puncture the inflatable or injure other riders. Remove all jewelry and empty pockets before entering.
3
Follow weight and capacity limits
Every unit has a maximum weight and capacity. Exceeding these limits is the #1 cause of bounce house injuries. Our staff will brief you on limits at setup.
4
No flipping, wrestling, or roughhousing
Somersaults, wrestling, and aggressive play cause the majority of bounce house injuries. Establish clear rules before kids enter.
5
Separate by age and size
Keep toddlers and small children separate from older, larger kids. A 10-year-old landing near a 3-year-old is a recipe for injury.
6
Adult supervision at all times
Never leave a bounce house unattended. An adult should be watching at all times — not just nearby, but actively watching.
7
No food, drinks, or gum inside
Choking hazards and slippery surfaces. Keep all food and drinks outside the inflatable.
8
Exit immediately in bad weather
At the first sign of lightning, high winds, or heavy rain, all riders must exit immediately. Do not re-enter until conditions are safe.
9
Use the entrance/exit properly
Kids should enter and exit one at a time, using the designated opening. No climbing up the outside of the inflatable.
10
Don't exceed the unit's age recommendation
Each unit has a minimum age. Children under 3 should not use standard bounce houses. Check the unit's posted guidelines.

What to Ask Your Rental Company Before You Book

Not all inflatable rental companies are equal. Before you hand over a deposit, ask these five questions:

Are you licensed and insured?
Any legitimate rental company should carry commercial general liability insurance. Ask for proof. Wow Inflatables is fully licensed in Georgia and carries comprehensive liability coverage.
Are your units inspected before each rental?
Units should be inspected for tears, punctures, and anchor integrity before every delivery. We inspect every unit at our warehouse and again on-site at setup.
Are your stakes and anchoring systems ASTM compliant?
ASTM F2374 is the industry safety standard for inflatable amusement devices. Our anchoring systems meet or exceed this standard.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance?
If you're hosting at a park, school, church, or corporate venue, the venue will likely require a COI. We provide certificates of insurance at no charge.
What is your weather cancellation policy?
You should never be penalized for weather you can't control. Our policy: free rescheduling or full refund for weather-related cancellations.

Weather Safety: When to Stop and When It's Fine

Georgia weather is beautiful in spring and summer — but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Here's a clear guide to what's safe and what isn't:

✓ SAFE
Light drizzle
Light rain is generally fine. The inflatable surface gets slightly slippery, so remind kids to be careful.
! CAUTION
Heavy rain
Exit the inflatable. Heavy rain reduces visibility and makes the surface dangerously slippery.
✗ STOP
Lightning or high winds
Immediately evacuate all riders. Do not re-enter until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike.

Age and Weight Guidelines

One of the most common safety mistakes is mixing age groups inside a bounce house. Here are the general guidelines we follow at Wow Inflatables:
