Bounce house setup in a backyard in Georgia showing space requirements

One of the first questions we hear from customers planning a party is: "Do I have enough space for a bounce house?" It is a great question — and one that can save you a lot of stress if you answer it before booking day.

At Wow Inflatables, we have set up bounce houses in backyards, parks, church parking lots, school fields, and corporate event spaces across Middle Georgia for over 20 years. Here is everything you need to know about space requirements before you book.

Minimum Space Requirements by Unit Type

Different inflatables have different footprints. Use this table as a starting point, then measure your space carefully before booking:

Unit TypeMin. Ground SpaceOverhead ClearanceBest For
Small Bounce House12×12 ft12–14 ftSmall backyards, toddler parties
Standard Bounce House15×15 ft14–16 ftBackyard birthday parties
Large Bounce House18×18 ft16–18 ftLarger backyards, parks

Pro Tip

These are minimum measurements. We recommend adding 3 feet of clearance on all sides for anchoring, blower placement, and safety. When in doubt, give us your yard dimensions and we will tell you exactly what fits.

How to Measure Your Space Correctly

Before you book, walk your setup area and measure these three things:

1
Ground footprint

Measure the flat, usable area in feet — length × width. Include 3 feet on each side for clearance. If your yard is 20×20, your usable bounce house footprint is about 14×14 after clearance.

2
Overhead clearance

Look up. Are there tree branches, power lines, awnings, or deck overhangs? Measure the lowest point above your setup area. Most bounce houses need 14–20 feet of clearance.

3
Access path

Our crew needs to carry the inflatable from the truck to the setup area. Make sure there is a path at least 4 feet wide with no steps, tight gates, or obstacles. If access is limited, let us know when booking.

What Surfaces Can a Bounce House Be Set Up On?

The surface under your bounce house matters for both safety and anchoring. Here is what works and what does not:

OKGrass (preferred)

Best option. Easy to anchor with stakes. Soft landing if kids fall near the entrance.

OKConcrete or asphalt

We bring sandbags for anchoring. Works well for parking lots and driveways.

OKPacked dirt

Acceptable if flat and firm. We stake into the ground.

NOGravel or rocks

Not safe. Sharp edges can damage the inflatable and hurt kids.

NOSteep slope

Anything more than a slight grade is unsafe. We will not set up on significant slopes.

NOWet mud

Unstable and unsafe. We may reschedule if heavy rain has made the ground unsuitable.

Small Backyard? We Have Options

Do not assume you do not have enough space. We have bounce houses designed for compact backyards in Macon, Warner Robins, Forsyth, and across Middle Georgia. Here are your options if space is tight:

  • Our smallest bounce houses fit in a 12×12 foot space — perfect for townhome patios and small yards
  • Toddler bounce houses are compact and designed for ages 1–5, with lower height requirements
  • We can often set up in a driveway or on a concrete pad with sandbag anchoring
  • If your yard is too small, consider a nearby park — we deliver to parks throughout Middle Georgia
  • Tell us your exact dimensions when booking and we will find the right fit

Park Setups in Middle Georgia

Many of our customers in Macon, Warner Robins, Forsyth, and surrounding cities choose to set up at a local park. Parks offer more space, shade, and room for larger events. A few things to know:

  • Most parks require a permit for commercial inflatable rentals — check with your city parks department
  • We provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for park events at no extra charge
  • Parks typically have no power outlets — you may need a generator (see our generator guide below)
  • Grass parks are ideal for anchoring; concrete pavilion areas work with sandbags
  • We serve parks in Macon, Warner Robins, Forsyth, McDonough, Griffin, and all surrounding cities

Need a Generator?

If your setup area does not have access to a standard 20-amp electrical outlet within 100 feet, you will need a generator. Read our full guide on generator requirements for bounce house rentals.

  • Measured the access path from the street to the setup area (4+ feet wide)
  • Checked for any gates, steps, or obstacles in the access path

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I need for a bounce house?

Most standard bounce houses require a flat area of at least 15 feet wide by 15 feet long, with 20 feet of overhead clearance. Combo units and obstacle courses need more space — typically 20x30 feet or larger. Always measure your yard before booking.

Can I put a bounce house on a slope?

Bounce houses must be set up on a flat, level surface. A slight grade of 1–2% is acceptable, but anything steeper is unsafe and we will not set up on significantly sloped ground. If your yard has a slope, contact us to discuss options.

How much clearance does a bounce house need overhead?

Most bounce houses need 15–20 feet of overhead clearance. Water slides and tall combo units may need 18–22 feet. Watch for tree branches, power lines, and overhangs. We will assess the setup area when we arrive.

Can a bounce house fit in a small backyard?

Yes — we have compact bounce houses designed for smaller backyards. Our smallest units fit in a 12x12 foot space. Tell us your yard dimensions when booking and we will recommend the right unit.

What surface can a bounce house be set up on?

Bounce houses can be set up on grass (preferred), concrete, asphalt, or packed dirt. Grass is safest and easiest to anchor. We bring sandbags for hard surfaces. We cannot set up on gravel, rocks, or uneven terrain.

How far from fences and obstacles should a bounce house be?

Leave at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides of the bounce house. This gives our crew room to work, allows proper anchoring, and prevents kids from bouncing into fences or walls.
